Installing
Isolation Transformers
Installing
Isolation Transformers is an important phase, and
the next step, in your isolation
transformer ownership process.
When you begin the process of Installing
Isolation Transformers, there are several key installation areas to address
as follows:
- Inspection – When you
receive your isolation transformer, conduct a simple, visual, check to
see that everything looks in place and in order.
- Safety – Note the access
cover on your isolation transformer, which is used facilitate
installation and service. Voltage is extremely hazardous and the power
should be disconnect before opening this cover or touching any internal
parts. The cover must be kept securely in place, at all times, during
normal operation.
- Circuits and Connections
-
Wiring and connection of the isolation
transformer should be exactly as described in the owner’s manual or
wiring diagram, or as otherwise specified. This is not an area for
second-guessing. Proper wiring and connection will ensure proper
operation, and diminishes the probability of damage, or injury, to the
equipment, isolation transformer, and people.
-
Spacing and Mounting - Isolation transformers
should be spaced at least 6” apart and those rated 30KVA and larger
should also be at least 6” from ceilings and walls. There should be
adequate ventilation around the isolation transformer and the area
around it should be kept clear. Avoid mounting near heat-generating
equipment or any hazardous processes.

Storage
and Maintenance of Isolation Transformers
Installing Isolation Transformers
also includes the
important areas of storage and maintenance. Isolation Transformers
offers the following advice regarding these to important areas of
Installing Isolation Transformers:
-
Store your isolation
transformer in a warm, dry, location which exhibits uniform
temperatures.
-
Outdoor storage of your isolation transformer should be avoided but if
it cannot be helped, keep the area free from contaminants and moisture.
-
Condensation and moisture can be greatly eliminated with heaters.
However, if your transformer has been subject to moisture, the moisture
can be "baked" out with a heater before operating. This is
especially important for transformers that are 5KV and higher.
-
Annual, visual, inspections of your isolation transformer should be
completed. At this time, look for any loose connections, terminal
and splice conditions and for any indication of deteriorating paint,
rust and/or overheating.
-
During maintenance, disconnect the isolation
transformer from the power source. Remove the cover at this time
and clean out any dirt and/or debris. Screens covering the
ventilating openings should also be cleaned at this time.
