Drive Isolation Transformer

One area that a Drive Isolation Transformer is primarily designed for is the protection of internal power systems from the backflow of harmonic currents created by AC/DC adjustable speed drives.  When harmonic currents and mechanical stresses are created by AC/DC adjustable rate drives, beyond what is normally handled by a standard transformer, the Drive Isolation Transformer steps up to the plate and takes over.  A Drive Isolation Transformer can stop the damaging harmonic currents from back flowing to the power lines and causing greater damage to other equipment.

What is the Difference Between Standard and Drive Isolation Transformers? 

A common question that is often asked is, "How is a Drive Isolation Transformer different from a standard transformer?"  It is not always easy to differentiate between the two because at the present time, there are not specific standards that enable you to tell the difference between them.  However, there are several criteria that a transformer must meet to qualify as a Drive Isolation Transformer, the following list can aid in differentiating between the two:

• The transformer must have at least 3 percent inductive reactance level.

• The transformer must meet the IEEE 597 standard on overloads.

• The transformer must be listed UL 1561 for non-sinusoidal current loads.

• The transformer but be engineered to handle highly cyclic process control applications and the thermal and mechanical stresses associated with them.
